While many job seekers focus all of their efforts on applying for jobs, one of the most important things you can do is spend time networking. But networking alone isn’t enough. It is essential that you are clear about what you are looking for and what you bring to the employer.
Informational interviews are a key strategy when looking for a job. Since 80% of the jobs are never advertised or posted, that means who you know is important. If you have an established network, let your contacts know what you are looking for so they can keep you in mind when they hear of something that might suit you.
Make a list of the “connectors” in your network. Those are the people that are always introducing people that they think will be able to do business together. Schedule 20-30 minutes to talk with them and share your ideas. Ask for their suggestions about whom else to speak.
You can utilize social media sites like LinkedIn, the Facebook for business social media platform. Most people use LinkedIn as an online resume and don’t think about how to stand out. Your profile should tell a story about your background and experience and the value that you provide. Give your audience a taste of what you can do for them.
Participate in Job Fairs because you never know who you might connect with that will lead you to the job you most desire.
